I am a 27 year old female and have been on Xanax for over 3 years and I am sick of them. They work wonderfully to keep my anxiety at bay, but the little boogers have made me gain 50 pounds! A friend says that they slow your metabolism down to almost non-existent. I think I may have more of a chemical dependency on them by now as my life is not so stressful as it once was. I need to get off of them!!! But I feel that I do need an alternative medication, to help calm my nerves and keep me from getting depressed. But one that doesn’t cause weight gain!!! Any suggestions and shared personal experiences will be much welcomed. Thanks!!!
Well, I’m sorry to inform you, but, nothing is as effective as Xanax in regards to how quickly they work and how well they work.
I was on them for over 5 years and never gained weight. Have you had a physical recently that checked your thyroid etc??
I mean, if you want alternatives, the ones they tried on me during my “taper” were Buspar (total crap), prozac, and Lexapro.
the thing I found witih Xanax that may be partially responsible for weight gain is it makes you so relaxed you don’t care to do much leading to greater than normal inactivity. Maybe if you could be more aware of that, if that is the case in your situation, you could stay on the Xanax. Another option is always to taper down to a lower daily dose so you still ward off the anxiety but don’t have so much that you feel lethargic…hope this helps.
I take xanax and I haven’t gained weight with them. You sure you aren’t just overeating and using that as an excuse?
