Your Ultimate Guide to Gaining Weight

How Can My Puppy Gain Weight?

my APBT is right at 6 months and very healthy as far as energy, coat etc. i feed her science diet ONLY b/c i wanted her to be in great shape, but compared to her siblings she looks so thin. They say they feed their dogs healthy things like cheese and chicken as well as hard dog food. Any tips on weight gain and advice on if any human food is okay for dogs?

Make sure you have the dog checked by a vet for worms or other medical condition then if all is clear ask to purchase a tube of nutracal (looks like a tube of brown toothpaste) We had this problem with a rotty pup. The little one put on weight & due to the vitamins, his coat looked great. Human food is not advised for many health reason. I can say my kids do slip our dogs food now & then as a treat. Eggs are good as is olive oil mixed in their food once a week.

You don’t need to turn to human food to get weight on your dog.
First you need to have the dog looked at by a vet – or just a vet tech, they won’t charge for that – they can tell you if the dog is in fact underweight. Just because she’s thinner than her siblings, does not mean she’s not at her ideal weight.
By the way, every single person on here is going to tell you that Science Diet is crap food. Well I can’t imagine the USA version is SO different from the English version, which is great food and a premium brand. However if you do give in to the ‘wisdom’ of random strangers on here and decide to change brand fine – but get weight on your dog with dog food not human food. People should not be feeding dogs cheese.
Please take note of what I said above – do NOT start trying to get extra weight on your dog until you’ve confirmed with a vet or nurse that she actually IS underweight. It might just be that her siblings are more muscly than her due to a different lifestyle or something. I would be a tragedy to put extra weight on a dog who’s at ideal weight!
