Your Ultimate Guide to Gaining Weight

How Much Weight Gain Is Normal In Pregnancy?

I am 5′6 and normally weigh 130. I am 31 weeks pregnant and have already gained 36 lbs. My doctor wants to put me on a “pregnancy diet,” to prevent me from gaining much more weight. I don’t have any diabetic or hypertensive symptoms. Is that normal?

It varies depending on your size and the size of your baby. Usually they say that if you are over weight to begin with (which you are not according to the weight you stated) then only gain 15 lbs. If you are the correct weight for your height when you started then gain between 20-35 lbs. You doctor is most likely concerned that your baby will be too big if you gain too much weight. I know people who have gained everywhere from 10 lbs – 80 lbs and all had healthy babies and eventually lost the weight. Hear your doctor out and ask lots of questions to see why he or she is so concerned. Maybe that will answer your question on wether or not to change what you are eating.
    Best of luck!

25-35 pounds is normal weight gain.

  3. bryce,ashton,cassidy's mommy says:

they usually only want you to gain a max of 35lbs but sometimes thats hard to do my 1st i gained 81lbs and my 2nd i gained 40lbs and this preg im 27w 5d and have barely gained anything in fact ive lost 17lbs so dont stress over it i was actually told by a dr. one of the reasons they dont want you to gain to much is because its harder to lose and the baby may tend to be large and not able to fit through the pelvis

  4. aimstir3 says:

    they say 25 is normal.

  5. Leslie says:

35-40 is what they say is ideal–so at over 40weeks pregnant, so you have 9weeks left…to only gain 4lbs! but i started at about your height/weight too & gained like 70lbs–my whole family gets huge! mostly water–i lost about 50lbs the first 2-3days…with a 9+lb baby & the afterbirth, etc…. but my feet got HUGE…if I ever get prego again, I would watch the fat/empty calories/junk food/french fries/ice cream…etc. and try to walk and drink water and eat a low sugar/low sodium diet–mostly whole foods and non-processed stuff. i think its hereditary, but also you could always eat better–its for the baby, but also for you to feel good once you have the baby–you want to feel light as a feather and play and run up and down steps…go for walks…you wont want to feel lethargic and fat :) and you want to get into your skinny clothes again!! for every 5pounds over 16lbs you gain, add a month to lose it too…

dont worry about a diet. i gained 80 lbs each preg and me and the baby were healthy both times. i also lost all the weight in 2 months. i breastfed

Wow! Too bad for you! I’m 34 weeks pregnant and have only gained 10 pounds.
    Self-control!!

  8. chickie8 says:

He probably just wants to make sure you don’t develop these problems. Just because you don’t have it right now doesn’t mean you can’t get it. Your almost done with your pregnancy also so if your baby is healthy and growing alright I wouldn’t worry which is what seems to be your concern. He/She won’t starve if you don’t gain any more weight just take from you what you have already gained. Hope this helps to answer your question and good luck. :)

  9. Goddess says:

As long as you don’t have any other health issues, the doctor’s probably recommending the diet just to make it easier on you (to lose the weight) after the baby is born. I’m 5′0 and normally weigh 110 pounds. I gained over 50 pounds while pregnant with each of my children. My doctor was never concerned because my health was good overall. I wouldn’t worry about a diet — unless of course blood pressure, diabetes or another problem becomes an issue.
It probably took me a little longer to lose the weight than a woman who gained much less during her pregnancy — BUT both of my children were healthy and a normal weight (7.6 lbs and 7.2 lbs), so my weight gain obviously wasn’t an issue for that, and I enjoyed the pregnancy more because I wasn’t worrying about my weight gain. In about a month, I was back to my normal weight. The majority of it having been lost at delivery (water/fluid, the afterbirth/placenta, the baby, etc.)
Just eat lots and lots healthy foods – indulge once in awhile in your favorite goody — and enjoy the pregnancy!

    EXPECT TO GAIN ANOTHER 20
hate to break it to ya but thats life

  11. mommabig says:

they only want you to gain around 25 to 35 pounds. But some woman also think that because they are pregnant they can just go hog wild. don’t feel bad, i gained a lot of weight with both pregnancies, but i lost it after the birth of my children. if they put you on a pregnancy diet it’s ok and they just have you cut back on how much you take in and the calorie count.

  12. Courtney says:

I have gained 40 lbs and am 3 weeks away from giving birth. My doctor says it is fine, every woman is different. Just go for a walk everyday, that is what I do.

  13. Anna M says:

I was 130 and I am 5′6″ , when I got pregnant with my second and weighed 176 in the end. But….. came home from the hosp. and weighed 154!!!! Good luck!!

  14. peterson says:

I say what you have gained is fine…they docs usually say about 25 pounds they might have asked you to put on more weight if they think the baby is getting bigger and needs more room

  15. Cameron & Kaelynn's Mommy says:

its normal to gain anywhere from 30-40 pounds…
but the smaller you are its okay to gain more than tht
im 21 weeks an ive gained 17 pounds.
    my doctor said its fine.
25 is not mormal at all..
they use to think tht but its wrong.

  16. independ says:

different people gain a different amount..but 20-40 lbs. is the norm.

  17. Whitney M says:

the most i have heard was 50lbs @ the most. im not a doctor so im not 100% sure but thats how much i gained and the doctor said it was all normal but then again im only 16 she was born 3 weeks ago soo cute!

  18. Miki says:

i think any where from 15-35lbs. people who are overweight from the beginning are discouraged from gaining more then 15lbs. it puts them at risk for gestational diabetes and hypertention.

  19. Baby Ruth is 36wks pg w/ a boy! says:

normal is to gain around 2lbs for each month, so around 18-20lbs. I also gained a lot during pg, no medical problems, just couldn’t stop eating!

  20. tw9165 says:

Well at 130 your a GREAT weight for your height!!!! Maybe too skinny even…sooo….a little extra is no big deal. I’d say…mainly cuz all of my friends gained quite a bit of extra weight, and they were, before pregnancy, and are now after baby, looking damn GOOD!! so you will be just fine. Just get on the diet (which I may put myself on here soon – gained 23 #’s and I’m 28 weeks. (but I gained that a month ago lol, just tapered off) AND GOOD luck too ya!! UR ALMOST DONE!

  21. Lil Devin's Mommy says:

Well, it’s hard to say. I only gained 23 lbs but that is because I was overweight before I got pregnant. Here is a link to a page that can help you…http://www.babycenter.com/0_pregnancy-we…

  22. gg says:

It is a tiny bit higher than normal, but some women are different.
I gained 5 pounds in my entire first pregnancy and ate a LOT, but gained 40 pounds during the last month…all water due to pre-eclampsia.
I am now 21 weeks pregnant with baby #2, and have gained 5 pounds already, and I don’t eat very much.
Now, something to take into consideration is your HEIGHT. I’d say that 36 pounds is normal for that height. I am 5′3″.
Is it possible there might be twins in there? I have a girlfriend who is 5′7″, and had twins and gained 75 pounds when pregnant.

  23. Eleni says:

If you are underweight, which you were’nt, you’re supposed to gain 25-35. Average weight, which you were, should gain from 20-30.
It’s very normal. I was underweight, but not by a whole lot (97 lbs and 5′) and I’ve gained 34 lbs (now 36 weeks along) and my Dr. is telling me to back off the ho-hos.

  24. rachel says:

My older sister is about 26 weeks along in her pregnancy. She has gained maybe 23 pounds. I asked her about your situation and she says that sounds about right for this time of your pregnancy. Don’t be nervous! An easy way to stay fit during pregnancy is exercising. However, there are some special exercises you must do as to not disturb your baby. These tapes are formatted just for pregnant women! Hope this helped!
