    You are NOT EATING FOR AN ELEPHANT!
    You should be eating more HEALTHLY!
    Extra calories as the baby is getting bigger meaning in 4 months or so and those calories should come from something like milk……………
    I was always sick my first trimester…..gained the most the last trimester………..the more you gain in the beginning, the harder its going to be to lose.

  2. love is forgiving says:

    Yes is normal as your body is changing and going through different hormones. But that does not mean you should eat everything in sight, you should still just eat for one. When I was pregnant with my first daughter I thought that I had to eat for two (adult)and so I double the portions well I gained 50 pounds, with my second I knew better, and only gained 16lbs, and delivered an almost 9pound baby. so just eat what you want, but just in small portions. you are pregnant after all, so this is the only time you can eat anything you want without feeling guilty, enjoy it, just in moderation.

    It’s normal to be hungry, especially if you’re diet is lacking in some of the essential vit/min.
    Get a pre-natal vitamin and eat a super healthy diet.
    Watch your gain and go to your OB to see if it’s climbing too quickly.
    If you feel hungry for snacks, eat lots of salad and fruit. The baby will thrive and you’ll get some extra folic acid, which is essential in avoiding neural tube defects.
    Avoid potato skins and limit the spices. They can both be toxic to your growing baby.

  5. magicgee says:

    they say no more than 10 pounds if your hungry drink a tall glass of milk it is filling or eat fruit – good luck

  6. keevelis says:

    That saying that you don’t need any more calories than normal in your first trimester is bunk. At least for myself, and everyone I know who has been pregnant. I was absolutely RAVENOUS five weeks into my pregnancy- and it never went away, not until I finished breastfeeding. Weight gain is dependent on your prepregnancy weight. Underweight, and you should gain more, overweight you should gain less. Just eat when you are hungry, only when you are hungry. And try to only eat healthy whole foods, like fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, whole grain breads and pastas. And drink lots of water.
    I gained 34 lbs over my pregnancy, and lost 24 of it in the first two weeks after delivery. I’m 12 lbs less than I was prepregnancy- and no exercise, just breastfeeding.

  7. patti says:

    Yes it some pregnancy it different for everyone. I acually needed to break out the maternity clothes at 11 wks. last 2 times I was pregnant I only gain 20 pound total.and ate ALL the time. this time I am 31 wks now and gain 40 pounds. but I am on bedrest and have no way to burn it off. Eat and enjoy you can always work it off later(lol this time I prepared and lost 30 pounds before I got pregnant) IOh and all three times I gained 10 pounds in my first trimester.

  8. Lacoutur says:

    I was never hungry, I was sick and had to force myself to drink ensures and actually lost weight the first tri. But, everyone is different. You are also at a weight where it is probably not necessary for you to gain all but a few pounds for you pregnancy. At the place you are w/ your pregnancy, the baby is a bean and wont need much food till your last trimester….

  9. Heather R says:

    Where does all the extra weight go?
    Here is an approximate breakdown of your weight gain:
    * Baby = 7-8 pounds
    * Placenta = 1-2 pounds
    * Amniotic fluid = 2 pounds
    * Uterus = 2 pounds
    * Maternal breast tissue = 2 pounds
    * Maternal blood = 4 pounds
    * Fluids in maternal tissue = 4 pounds
    * Maternal fat and nutrient stores = 7 pounds
    How much total weight should I gain?
    The amount of weight you should gain depends on your weight before pregnancy. You should gain:
    * 25-37 pounds: If you were a healthy weight before pregnancy
    * 28-40 pounds: If you were underweight before pregnancy
    * 15-25 pounds: If you were overweight before pregnancy
    At what rate should I gain weight during my pregnancy?
    How much you should gain depends on your weight before you were pregnant and how far along you are in your pregnancy.
    * Healthy Weight Before Pregnancy:
    o 3-5 pounds during the first trimester
    o Approximately 1-2 pounds per week in the second trimester
    o Approximately 1-2 pounds per week in the third trimester
    * Underweight Before Pregnancy:
    o 5-6 pounds or more in your first trimester; this also can depend on how underweight you were before pregnancy & your health care provider’s recommendations
    o 1-2 pounds per week in the second and third trimesters
    * Overweight Before Pregnancy:
    o Approximately 1-2 pounds in the first trimester
    o Approximately 1 pound per week during the last six months
    Hope that helps! Congradulations!

    Yes, it is completely normal to feel more hunger than before. Every woman’s body is different. Most likely you will not be gaining “extra” weight. Please eat whatever you want to eat in the first and second trimester, remember you are eating for two. Also don’t forget to take your vitamins. Congrats.

  11. 5K Kcal says:

    Its normal to feel hungry, you need to start eating more early on so your child gets all the right nutrients throughout development.

  12. Gypsyday says:

    Yes, it is normal. Just remember, that you need to eat healthy things. Eating several small meals a day (brkfst, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack) is better than eating 1 or 2 large meals. No, you don’t want to gain a whole bunch of weight. Your OB will tell you what is normal & what isn’t. The more weight gain you have, the higher your chances are of becoming gestational diabetic & having other problems. Your weight gain will also depend on what your starting weight is. These days if you’re overweight to begin with then they reccommend that you don’t gain a whole bunch & vice versa if you’re underweight.
    Your hormones are going nuts which is causing your appetite to be more. Just eat sensibly & eat healthy & the weight gain shouldn’t be to horribly bad. Remember also that what you put on you’ve gotta take off & those who gain over the reccommended amount have a harder time slimming down afterwards.
    Good luck! Eat healthy (carrott sticks, raisins, all kinds of fruits, veggies..) If you can, a low carb diet is wonderful. They put me on one when I was pregnant both times because of gestational diabetes. It was healthy for both me & the baby!
    Here’s some info. I found for you on the web: http://www.butterflybabies.co.uk/1st-tri…
    “Recapping; Do you gain weight the first trimester of pregnancy? Is a common question among expecting mothers so we thought we could offer some insight on this.
    When you are pregnant, you have to be careful with a lot of details if you want to have a healthy baby (and of course you want this!). One of this is the weight you have to gain during pregnancy. If you are an expecting mother, you probably know that an adult normal-weight woman must gain something between 25 and 35 pounds, by the ninth month. You must also know that you have to gain weight mainly in the second and in the third trimester, but many of you ask yourselves: do you gain weight the first trimester of pregnancy?
    The first trimester is the beginning of this important journey that is pregnancy. Even if it won’t get obvious that you are carrying a baby from the outside, you will feel different and you will notice many changes in your body. These include breast changes, you will urinate more often, you may be much more tired than usual, and you may have nausea, heartburn, headaches. Besides these, some women reclaim feelings of depression, anxiety, fear and mood swings. You might also feel the weight gain (that will most probably occur from the first trimester) as one of the important changes in your body, especially if you’ve had constantly swinging weight gain over the past few years.
    It is recommended to gain about 3 to 5 pounds in the first trimester of pregnancy. Sometimes it’s difficult to gain weight during pregnancy, even if you want to. You might even lose weight in the first trimester, because of the morning sickness, lack of appetite and tiredness. How risky might this be for your baby? On the other hand, it is possible to gain much more than the normal amount of weight in the first trimester. This is also not healthy for either of you. Let’s discuss these two situations separately.
    Do you gain weight the first trimester of pregnancy if you eat barely anything? Perhaps not, but you don’t have to worry about this. During the nausea-prone first trimester, few women manage to eat “by the book”. That’s why it is important to enter pregnancy with enough nutritional reserves to provide for you and your baby.
    If you didn’t manage to gain at least 2 pounds after the first trimester of pregnancy, or even lose some weight you don’t need to panic, this is not a reason for the baby not to develop normally, but you should consult a specialist in nutrition. If you didn’t have healthy-eating habits before, pregnancy is the time to develop these good habits. Even if you don’t have an appetite and you feel a little sick, make sure that what you eat , at least, is high-calorie but healthy food. You don’t have to exaggerate with eating junk food and having endless desserts, even if you didn’t manage to gain the proper weight in the first trimester. This may be harmful for the baby.
    On the other hand, excessive weight gain can lead to health problems for the mother, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and varicose veins, and will increase the difficulty of delivery. Besides these, it might become difficult for you to manage your weight properly after delivery. You probably know that much of the extra weight goes to your baby (7-8 pounds), the extra blood and fluid volume (8 pounds), amniotic fluid (2 pounds), uterus, placenta, breast enlargement, and extra fat stores (7 pounds) in case of illness or “hard times.”
    But in the first trimester of pregnancy the baby and her “housing” are still yet very small, and your pregnancy weight gain needs are covered with 5-6 pounds. The extra pounds you gain above these 5-6 are yours only. Don’t even consider compensating them with gaining less in the second or in the third trimester. Anyway, it gets physically improbable; even if you starve yourself you could gain weight.
    The question “do you gain weight the first trimester of pregnancy?” is usually posed by mothers who are concerned about their baby’s health and proper development.

    Every pregnancy is different and every womans body reacts differently. It is normal for you to feel hungrier than usual, try eating healthy snacks during this time, it is vital for you more than the baby because your body will process fat differently now. Good luck!

    You made me laugh. Only because it’s so funny that people say you don’t have to eat more. I may not have had to eat more but all I wanted was cheese burgers and lots of em :)
    I don’t know why either but yes , you totally crave more in the first trimester. I always say that I have no idea how much I gained before my 8 week appt but it must have been a ton!! They say we crave meat because of the iron our body now needs but gosh everything just tasted so good and I craved it all! I keep saying that I wish food tasted as good post pregnancy as it did during pregnancy. good thing it doesnt though or I would never lose these last few lbs.
    They say 25-35 the whole pregnancy is a healthy goal. I gained 40 and again I wish I knew how much before that 8 week appt. My dr always said as long as you dont eat fast food every day Im fine with you gaining.
    my one friend gained 70 lbs with both pregnancies but lost it right after and got in great shape both times

    Yes it’s normal for some. I eat all the time and haven’t actually gained anything yet. I try to eat as healthy as I can. I eat cereal with a pc of fruit in the morning, pc of fruit when I get to work, a granola bar if I need it, mid morning I eat a lean cuisine meal then another for lunch if I am hungry, pc of fruit in the afternoon, then dinner at night. I find that I am most hungry in the morning so I stock up on healthy snacks at work to eat during that time.
    Here is a weight gain chart for you. Just keep in mind that everyone is different and as long as you are staying healthy you shouldn’t focus too much on the chart. I have talked to some women that gain like crazy in the beginning and then almost nothing the last 3-4 months.http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnan…

  16. sugababe says:

    yes it is normal some people can gain up to 20lbs in the first trimester oh and congradulations on the baby hope it all goes well!!!

  18. ERICKSMA says:

    I started at 159 and gained 2 pds the first 3 months but then the 4 month I gained 8pd, 5th 8 pds, 6th 4pds, 7th 6pds, 8th still gaining..I started to feel really hungry around my 4th month..and hasn’t stopped yet.

  19. Just my opinion says:

    During pregnancy, you ONLY need to increase your caloric intake by 300 calories. Not much. If you are always hungry and therefore always eating you should be careful. Take more walks AND drink lots more water. Try and fill up on fiber, you know…. fruits, veggies.
    You are not fat but may want to be careful in how much weight you gain. Your doctor may only require you gain no more than 20ish lbs.

    Girl eat for ya baby Don’t worry about no weight as long as you are eating healthy and eating stuff that will fill you up don’t matter how much weight you put on I’m 5′3″ and trust me i was eating all i could for my baby if she was hungry i fed her no matter how much weight i put on i lost it all in the end.

  21. Kier22_2 says:

    I know what you mean…I have never been hungrier in my life!
    Im now 14 weeks and it does taper off. I actually lost 6 lbs.

  22. Mrs.P says:

    It’s normal to feel hungrier than usual – at least for some women (at 8 weeks, I didn’t want to eat anything, ever). But just because you are hungrier more often does not mean you need to take in extra calories. Just eat small amounts of food often, instead of large portions only a few times a day.
    As for weight gain, most of your weight gain should happen in the second half of pregnancy, from 20 weeks on. My doctor said prior to this point, a normal weight gain is about 0-10 lbs. The weight gain in the first trimester shouldn’t be huge. Make sure you are eating healthy and not gorging yourself and you will know that whatever weight you gain is normal for you. I gained practically nothing in the first trimester… maybe 2 or 3 lbs.

  23. melomego says:

    Did you know that you can eat a whole watermelon and not hurt your figure.
    Eat! But, find good foods that are full of water. Like:
    -Watermelon
    -Papaya
    -Cantalopes
    -Apples
    -Cucumbers
    -Green Peppers
    -Ice Water w/ a squirt of lemon juice surpresses appetite
    These are my personal favorites. There are others.
    I had lost about 70 pounds before I found out I was pregnant, so I was in dieting mode for a long time prior to my good news. I instantly gave in to food cravings and people telling me: “…that I was eating for 2 now…”. I gained back every last pound plus 20, and came very close to getting gestational diabetes…NOT FUN!!!!!
    Try you best to eat ONLY the very best for you and your baby, it will only benefit you both going forward.

  24. Greeneye says:

    Congratulations!!!!…..I was told you shouldn’t put on that much weight in the beginning and that more weight is at the end of the pregnancy, you should just eat healthy, maybe 3 or 4 snacks or more if needed (light ones) throughout the day, remember after the baby comes you’ll have to loose those extra pounds……….Good luck!!!!!
