Your Ultimate Guide to Gaining Weight

What Atypical Antipsychotic Does Not Cause Weight Gain?

I am on Geodon now (for my BPD) because my doc told me that it does not cause weight gain. I quit taking Zyprexa and Risperidone since I gained a lot of weight on them.
Thanks!

The only 2 atypical antipsychotics that I know that are proposed to not cause the same weight issues as the others are Abilify and Geodon. Your doctor is working with you on this one.

  2. ? says:

geodon contains ziprasidone, with least effect on weight even recent studies shows that it helps in decreasing the weight in patients who have gain it thru use of other antipsychotics……my advice i to better avoid bpd precipitating factors……..

Geodon is good. But I’ve been on Lamictal for almost 7 months and have lost weight (20lbs) on it. I was 160lbs, 5′9, now am 140lbs.
It has curbed my appetite, and importantly, has improved my life 3-fold.
Ihave Bipolar 2, and am only on Lamictal. It has worked wonders for me and has very few side effects for most peopl.
Maybe you can ask your pdoc is this is an option.
    Good luck.

[1] Abilify (aripiprazole) – less likely to cause obesity
[2] Geodon etc. (ziprasidone) – considered to be more “weight neutral” than most other atypicals
[3] Risperdal (risperidone) – associated with weight gain
[4] Seroquel (quetiapine) – also can cause weight gain.
[5] Zyprexa (olanzapine) – the most likely to cause significant weight gain http://www.revolutionhealth.com/pages/al…
Incidentally, Lamictal is not an atypical antipsychotic. It is an antiepileptic. But like the atypical antipsychotics, it can function as a mood stablizer in BPD (bipolar disorder) to prevent manic episodes and may be a good substitute for an atypical antipsychotic when weight gain has been an issue and neither Geodon nor Ability is affordable or working, but obviously not in conditions for which atypical antipsychotics are used other than BPD, such as schizophrenia. Most mood stablizers are atypical antipsychotics, antiepileptics or lithiumhttp://www.psycheducation.org/depression…
